What is Akshaya Tritiya?

Akshaya Tritiya or Akha Teej is a highly auspicious Hindu and Jain festival celebrated on the third day (Tritiya) of the lunar calendar, falling as the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of the bright half of the month of "Vaishakha". The word “Akshaya” means imperishable or never ending, symbolizing eternal prosperity, success, and good fortune. More so, Akshaya Tritiya falling on a Wednesday during Rohini Nakshatra is even more auspicious. Hence, it is considered that doing Japa, Yajna, Pitra-Tarpan, Dan-Punya on this day remains forever as an everlasting blessing or prayer.

Why is Akshaya Tritiya Celebrated?

This day is associated with several sacred events and beliefs:

·         Birth of Lord Parashurama – the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu

·         The day when Krishna blessed Sudama with abundance

·         Beginning of the composition of the Mahabharata by Ved Vyasa

·         Descent of the sacred river Ganga to Earth

·         Jain tradition: associated with Rishabhanatha breaking his year-long fast

Because of these associations, any good deed performed on this day brings everlasting benefits.

Sacred Rituals and Traditions:

1. Early Morning Bath & Puja - Devotees take a holy bath, often, in rivers like the Ganga, and perform prayers to Lakshmi and Vishnu.

2. Charity (Daan) - Giving donations of food, water, clothes, grains, jaggery, or ghee is highly encouraged. It is believed that charity on this day multiplies manifold.

3. Buying Gold - Purchasing gold is a popular tradition, symbolizing everlasting prosperity and wealth.

4. Fasting & Devotion - Many observe a fast and spend time chanting mantras, reading scriptures, and meditating.

5. Starting New Ventures - It is considered one of the most auspicious days to begin new business, investments, or life events no need to consult a separate muhurat (auspicious time).

Vedic astrologers also consider Askshaya Tritiya an auspicious day free from all malefic effects. As per Hindu Astrology three lunar days, Yugadi, Akshaya Tritiya and Vijaya Dashami do not need any Muhurta to start or perform any auspicious work, as these three days are free from all malefic effects.

Significance of Dhoop and Agarbatti:

Burning incense plays a very meaningful role in Akshaya Tritiya rituals:

·         Spiritual Purification:  Dhoop (resin incense) and agarbatti (incense sticks) purify the environment. The fragrant smoke is believed to remove negative energies and invite positivity.

·         Enhancing Devotion: The aroma creates a calm, focused atmosphere for prayer and meditation. It symbolizes the devotee’s surrender and devotion rising towards the divine.

·         Symbol of Offering: Just like flowers and food, fragrance too represents a subtle offering to deities like Lakshmi and Vishnu.

·         Connection to Elements: Incense connects to the element of "air", spreading sacred vibrations in your surroundings.
